Die Liedtexte der Minstrel Songs

Der Song "My Old Kentucky Home" von Stephen Foster beginnt mit folgenden Zeilen:

The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home,
'Tis summer, the darkies are gay,...(1)

Ein Auszug aus der plantation melody "Carry me back to old Virginny":

There's where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn.
No place on earth do I love more sincerely. (2)

In diesen Songs werden die Sklaven als immer fröhlich und immer singend dargestellt. Sie lieben ihre Besitzer und sind ihnen total ergeben, selbst wenn sie hart für sie arbeiten müssen. Das ganze Leben auf den Plantagen wird romantisiert. Ein weiteres Stereotyp dieser Lieder ist der wandernde Sklave ("wandering darkie"), der sich dorthin zurücksehnt, wo er angeblich "hingehört":

"Old folks at home":

All up and down the whole creation,
Sadly I roam,
Still longing for the old plantation,
And for the old folks at home. (3)

Mit Liedern wie diesen und der ständig wiederholten Idee, dass die Sklaven mit ihrem Schicksal zufrieden sind, gaben die Minstrels den Weißen ein reines Gewissen und eine gute Ausrede, nicht über deren Situation nachdenken zu müssen.

Obwohl die Minstrel Show Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts langsam von der Bildfläche verschwand, blieben die Minstrel Songs bestehen. Sie wurden allerdings immer mehr aus dem Kontext der Minstrel Shows herausgenommen. Während des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs wurden einige Songs, die ursprünglich für Minstrel Shows komponiert worden waren, zu Kampfliedern umgetextet. "Dixie's Land" zum Beispiel wurde zur offiziellen Südstaatenhymne. Die meisten der Lieder wurden aber zu sogenannten "Traditionals", also amerikanischen Volksliedern. Während dieses Prozesses wurden die Anspielungen auf den Minstrel-Kontext und der Pseudodialekt eliminiert und durch neutralere Ausdrücke ersetzt. "Darkie" wurde durch "fellow" ersetzt, Worte wie "massa" and "mistress" wurden ausgelassen. Die Rechtschreibung wurde auch dem modernen Standard angepasst, wie in "Swanee River":

Way down upon de Swanee Ribber, far, far away,
Dere's wha my heart is turning ebber,... (4)

--> Way down upon the Swanee River, far, far away,
There's where my heart is turning ever,... (5)

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden einige der Songs aus der Minstrel-Tradition trotz ihrer problematischen Herkunft zu offiziellen Hymnen verschiedener amerikanischer Bundesstaaten, wie "My old Kentucky Home" für Kentucky oder "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" für Virginia. Während dies für Kentucky immer noch gilt, wurde "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" in Virigina allerdings schon 1997 als State Song ausgesetzt, da man sich seines rassistischen Hintergrunds bewusst wurde. Offizieller State Song von Virginia ist seit 2015 "Our Great Virginia".
